Charities

We’re doing this bike ride for charity – as well as for the doubtless improved level of fitness- so you might want to know for which charities we want to raise money. Well, we’ve chosen three charities that are close to our hearts.

More after the jump...

The first charity is Practical Action which uses technology to tackle poverty across the globe.

Practical Action works with communities in the developing world to implement simple, sustainable and practical technology to help improve water supplies, sanitation, crop irrigation and shelter. This will help people to become more self-sufficient and resilient to natural disasters such as droughts and floods and work their way out of poverty and enable them to build a better future for themselves.

Phil: “I first heard about Practical Action through my Grandfather who had supported them for a long time; he was keen that donations continued to be made after he passed on. Since then I have supported them as their aim to provide technological solutions to global problems is very worthy. The other three team-members were really keen to support this charity for the same reasons. By doing this charity bike ride, we hope to raise a large amount of money that will inevitably make a difference for people who really need it”.

The second charity is Help for Heroes, which supports those who have been wounded in Britain’s current conflicts.

Help for Heroes raises money to support members of the Armed Forces who have been wounded in the service of their country.  They aim to show these extraordinary young men and women that they are cared for; they raise money for much-needed services that will aid their recovery through direct projects or supporting other service charities.

Although none of us have any involvement with Help for Heroes at the moment, direct or otherwise, we fully support their aims and beliefs. We have friends in military service, and should anything happen to them we would like to know that they will be supported by such a charity. That is more than enough reason to support Help for Heroes’ cause.

The third charity is Rowans Hospice, a local charity dedicated to improving the lives of people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses across Portsmouth and South East Hampshire, which provides services free of charge.

We really wanted to sponsor a local charity that makes a difference to local people. Knowing that Rowans Hospice deals with improving the lives of those with life limiting illnesses, it was an easy decision to make them our third charity. We hope that by giving them our sponsorship that we can help them provide essential services and patient care.

Each of the charities will get an equal split of the total money raised. However, if you wish to donate to a specific charity, let us know and we will make sure your money goes to the right place. You can donate in two ways; preferably through our Virgin Giving website which is easy to use (a web link is provided on the sidebar), or you can make a cash donation.
